A partly bleached coral reef is blindingly white next to healthy coral. Rising ocean temperatures, one of the many effects of global warming, are threatening coral reefs around the world. In response to the warming temperatures, a process known as bleaching occurs. Although bleaching doesnt kill coral reefs, they become more vulnerable to diseases.

Warming oceans may also be decreasing the level of phytoplankton, a natural absorber of carbon dioxide.
