Pyongyang, North Korea, February 25, 2008—North Korean performers dance during a show at the Mansudae Art Theatre during the New York Philharmonic's visit.

The oldest U.S. orchestra made an unprecedented visit to the snowy capital of the Communist country, giving a show on Tuesday that brought North Koreans to their feet in a standing ovation, the Associated Press reported.

Their choice of symphony, "From the New World," aimed to help thaw frigid ties between the United States and North Korea, the AP said.

Though neighboring South Korea trumpeted the concert as a major step forward, the Bush Administration played down the event. U.S. officials said future such cultural exchanges hinge on North Korea's agreement to end its nuclear program.
