Biologist Eric Warant of Sweden's University of Lund holds lenses taken from the eyes of a colossal squid on April 30, 2008. The squid is currently being studied in New Zealand.

The giant sea creature, caught last year off Antarctica, is believed to be the biggest squid ever captured, and scientists have determined that it has the largest eyes of any known animal.

The squid's enormous eyes are adapted to life in the inky depths, Warant noted.

"[Each eye] has a huge lens the size of an orange and captures an awful lot of light in the dark depths in which it hunts," he told the Associated Press.
