San Francisco, California, March 29, 2008—The Golden Gate Bridge glows, but barely, after most of its lights were extinguished for "Earth Hour" at 8 p.m. on March 29. Nearby restaurants switched to candlelight and office towers went dim to raise awareness of global warming.

San Francisco was among dozens of cities that participated in the global event, which was sponsored in part by the National Geographic Channel. (The Channel is affiliated with National Geographic News.)
