April 10, 2008—Huge curved sand dunes appear on the surface of Mars in this recently released NASA image.

The dunes were spotted by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter last month as it passed over the Hellespontus region in the red planet's southern hemisphere, where many of Mars's dust storms are thought to originate.

The formations' crescent shapes suggest that they were created by powerful winds blowing from west to east, collecting sand from nearby eroding plateaus, scientists said.
