Port-au-Prince, Haiti, April 7, 2008—A barricade of tires burns during a demonstration against rising food prices, which forced Haitian businesses and schools to close and reportedly resulted in one protestor's death.

Unrest over food costs is going global, with clashes reported from Bolivia to Egypt to Indonesia. The hikes have been blamed on issues such as higher transportation costs, increasing affluence in developing nations, and diversion of grain for in-demand biofuels.
