Spared for the moment from the inches-deep ashfall affecting neighboring areas, this street in largely agrarian Chaitin village in southern Chile nevertheless appears abandoned on May 4, 2008.

Some 4,300 Patagonians have been evacuated since the nearby Chaitén volcano began erupting on May 2. Many of them left behind cattle, horses, sheep, and other livestock in a forbidding landscape of ash-contaminated water and pastures.
