People flee buildings in Chongqing after a massive earthquake struck neighboring Sichuan Province on May 12, 2008.

Office buildings swayed in Beijing and Shanghai, and tremors were felt in distant cities including Taipei and Hanoi.

At least 8,533 people have died in Sichuan alone and dozens of other deaths were reported in surrounding areas, according to China's news agency, Xinhua.
