Suffolk, Virginia, April 29, 2008—Debris litters residential streets on April 29 after eight tornadoes tore across southeastern and central Virginia.

One twister cut a 25-mile-long (40-kilometer-long) zigzagging path through the Suffolk region, destroying houses, tossing cars, and injuring hundreds—but killing no one.

The twisters caused an estimated $22 million in damages, prompting Virginia Governor Timothy M. Kaine to declare a state of emergency.
