Agok, Sudan, June 3, 2008People who fled the embattled town of Abyei wait to pick up emergency food rations at a UN World Food Programme site in southern Sudan.

Intense fighting in oil-rich Abyei between government soldiers from the north and the Sudan People's Liberation Army, whose base of support is in the south, may displace up to 90,000 people, the Agence France-Presse news service reported last week.

On Saturday, southern Sudanese officials shot down on a proposal to create a joint north-south administration in Abyei.
