Qingdao, China, June 24, 2008—A crew on a barge helps remove algae in Qingdao, the host city for sailing events in the 2008 Olympic games.

After event organizers ordered a cleanup, the city government organized some 400 boats and 3,000 people to help remove the algal bloom, according to the Associated Press.

Some algae species have been known to produce toxins with debilitating or even fatal effects in humans and other animals. (See "Sea Lion Seizures May Result From Toxic Algae" [June 17, 2008].)
