Fish like this dog snapper, pictured on the Abrolhos Bank, Brazil, depend on coral reefs for food and shelter.

But corals are suffering from climate change. Rising ocean acidification is tampering with ocean chemistry to such an extent that, by mid-century, marine animals such as corals, mollusks, and lobsters will stop producing protective shells, according to a July 2008 study in the journal Science.
