A shadowy moon moves across the face of the sun during a cloudy 2006 total solar eclipse in Bucharest, Romania. Solar eclipses occur when the moon comes between Earth and the sun, blocking the star's light and throwing a lunar shadow onto the surface of the Earth. The moon is some 400 times smaller than the sun, but it appears the same size in our sky because it is about 400 times closer to Earth.
