July 14, 2008—NASA and Google have teamed up on a tool to help firefighters battle blazes during what has been a historically bad California wildfire season.

A NASA image captured by the Ikhana remotely-operated aircraft was overlaid onto topographical data from Google Earth to create this vivid visual of fire activity in Monterey County.

Yellow areas indicate active fires as of July 8, while red and purple hues depict burned-over terrain.

Eighty-one California wildfires were still burning as of July 15.
