Santiago de Cuba, Cuba, July 25, 2008—Students commemorate the anniversary of the beginning of the Cuban revolution by re-enacting a 1953 rebel attack.

Fifty-five years ago Cuban president Raul Castro and his brother, retired Cuban leader Fidel Castro, led a July 26 assault on the city's Moncada army barracks.

While both rebel leaders were jailed for the attempted siege, they succeeding in taking over years later when they defeated former Cuban leader Fulgencio Batista on January 1, 1959.
