Chicago, Illinois, August 1, 2008—A rockhopper penguin chick peeks out of its nesting den for the first time at the Lincoln Park Zoo. The chick hatched in early July. Its sex is unknown.

Rockhopper penguins are a northerly species, found hopping from rock to rock on islands near South America, the southern Indian Ocean, Australia, and New Zealand.

Worldwide populations have declined over the past 30 years due to overfishing, pollution, and global warming. They are listed as vulnerable by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.
