Allahabad, India, August 6, 2008—A cobra is doused with a milk offering—thought to protect the snake from evil—during the annual Hindu Nag Panchami festival, which is dedicated to the worship of snakes.

Cobras are venomous snakes that feed on rodents, lizards, and frogs. Snake charmers and their cobras abound during the festival.
