August 1, 2008— NASA's Terra satellite documented the total solar eclipse by turning its lenses toward a sepia-tinted Arctic.

As the moon passed between Earth and the sun, Terra captured the moon's shadow moving across the surface of our spinning planet.

People within the shadow's transit, known as the path of totality, observed a total eclipse that blotted out the sun for some two minutes. Those on the shadow's edges saw a partial solar eclipse.
