July 23, 2008—The ESA's Mars Express spacecraft snapped this high-resolution image of Phobos's battered surface from a distance of only 60 miles (97 kilometers).

Scientists suspect that the moon may be an asteroid that was captured by Mars and pulled into orbit around the planet.

Phobos bears dramatic scars from thousands of meteorite impacts. In 50 million years its ever shrinking orbit may end with its own spectacular crash into Mars.
