SPACE PHOTOS THIS WEEK: Saturn Moon, Mars ''Lava,'' More

August 16, 2008—Released Saturday, this theoretical model is touted as a new roadmap for galaxies like our own Milky Way.

Sloan Digital Sky Survey data suggest that galaxies are crisscrossed by many stellar highways and back roads.

The streams of stars looping around the galaxy are said to have been ripped from smaller, satellite galaxies by the massive gravitational tides of the Milky Way.

Main stellar "interstates" have been mapped, scientists say, but many smaller star roads, such as these, are as yet uncharted.
