Kasàtochi Island, Alaska, August 8, 2008—A dusky, swirling plume of ash signals the eruption of Kasàtochi volcano in an August 8 image snapped by NASA's Terra satellite above Alaska's Aleutian Islands.

The ash clouds from the largely underwater volcano forced the cancellation of dozens of Alaska-bound flights.

Falling ash and debris also settled on the water's surface and likely lent the deep blue Pacific the temporary turquoise hue seen at center in the image, which was released on August 13.
