Kathmandu, Nepal, August 2, 2008—Detained protesters shout anti-Chinese slogans from a police van near the Chinese consulate in Kathmandu, Nepal.

The August 2 demonstration, staged mainly by exiled Tibetans, was one of several worldwide in the run-up to the opening of the Summer Olympics in Beijing on Friday, August 8. Protesters decried, among other things, China's human rights record and its policies in Tibet.
