Chilung (Keelung), Taiwan, August 14, 2008—A burning water lantern shines as a beacon to guide ghosts and spirits lost at sea.

Many such lights were launched during the Chilung (Keelung) Midsummer Ghost Festival on August 14. The Taiwanese tradition has roots that date back thousands of years and includes both the Taoist and Buddhist faiths.

During the last 150 years the Chilung (Keelung) festival has become an important religious and cultural celebrationthe largest of its kind in Taiwan.
