Photo: City-Size Tract of Amazon Forest Cleared in April



Untouched rain forest borders land cleared for planting soybeans in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso in a February 25, 2008, photo.

In April alone, an area of forest nearly the size of New York City was leveled in the Brazilian Amazon, pointing to an "alarming" and "worse-than-imagined" trend, government officials announced in June.
